The history and development of the .net domain

Introduction

.net is a generic top-level domain that the early DNS policy documents associated with network-provider infrastructure. IANA’s root-zone record dates the .net delegation record to January 1, 1985 and lists VeriSign Global Registry Services as its sponsoring organisation.IANA delegation record RFC 1591 later described the original intended contents as the computers used by network providers, including their NIC, NOC, administrative and network-node systems.RFC 1591

Name and original use

The word “net” was used as a category label for network providers in RFC 1591, published in March 1994.RFC 1591 The document’s wording describes an intended namespace structure, not evidence that every later registration was checked against that category. It also says that customers of network providers would normally have domain names of their own rather than names inside .net.RFC 1591

Registry and policy changes

The July 1, 2023 agreement replaced the earlier agreement in full and says that ICANN continues to designate VeriSign as the sole registry operator, unless the agreement ends under its termination provisions.2023 ICANN agreement This gives the modern administrative relationship a clear contractual reference without turning the historical network-provider description into a current eligibility rule.

Use and market development

.net’s name still reflects its original role as a namespace for network providers. Its modern administration, however, rests on the registry agreement between ICANN and VeriSign rather than an industry-only registration rule.2023 ICANN agreement
